Today, many people believe the brain to be capable of awareness beyond the normal. Altered states of consciousness has become a popular topic of research. Yoga enthusiasts around the world aim to experience Samadhi or higher states of consciousness Centuries earlier, the Siddhar practitioners of South India explored and documented ways to achieve expanded awareness. They used a combination of Yoga, herbs, metals, minerals, yantras, and mantras to enter altered states of consciousness. Siddhar Agasthiyar, in his text Paripooranam 1200, says that a spiritual seeker can expand his awareness, stepwise, in seven stages.Pooranam is the name for one of the seven stages of awareness. A person in this stage of awareness discovers the present moment to be full and complete. A spiritual seeker trains himself to be in three other stages before advancing to the Pooranam state. In the first stage, a seeker learns to sustain happiness through awareness. He then finds out a secret in the second stage, that energy is the mother of an entire spectrum of human powers, both normal and supernatural. A mastery of these two stages leads a seeker to the third stage where awareness soaks in deep Silence. Agasthiyar asserts this silence to be the foundation for the Pooranam stage. An awareness of Fullness certainly yields Siddhis or extraordinary powers. Siddhar Agasthiyar says that Siddhis become commonplace once a seeker also experiences the fifth, sixth and the seventh stages. The legendary Meru Mountain is but a pyramid of the seven stages of awareness. The main topic of the Paripooranam 1200 text is the pyramid of seven stages with an emphasis on the Pooranam state.Today, people seek Siddhar formulations for health and healing. In the past, spiritual seekers sought them to harness the powers of expanded awareness. Agasthiyar's Paripooranam 1200 text elaborates the principles of Siddhar pharmacology. Knowledge of physiology is an asset to a student of modern medicine. Similarly, knowledge of the subtle body of energy, namely the Nadi channels and the Chakra energy centers is an asset to anyone who is trying to understand the link between Siddhar medicine and altered states of consciousness. A casual reader can find Siddhar texts, including Agasthiyar's Paripooranam 1200 challenging to understand. Therefore, in the past, a student learnt skills to alter their awareness under the guidance of a Guru, a Siddhar master. Siddhar masters taught Siddhi powers to a seeker in a stepwise manner. The seeker gains confidence in bringing the mind to a normal state of awareness after experiencing expanded awareness. Moreover, Agasthiyar believed a normal lifestyle to be no hindrance to experiencing expanded awareness. In addition, he advocated an ethical way of life. He also trusted in the efficacy of Siddhar formulations. Special siddha formulations can relieve the body of the strain of switching between normal and expanded states of awareness. In summary, any seeker could make the Pooranam a new state of normalcy by the sparing use of power preparations. Agasthiyar uses the Paripooranam 1200 text to assure the sincere seeker that the Pooranam state, when it becomes a new state of normalcy, can bring magic into an ordinary life. At the same time, it leads a seeker towards enlightenment. This book contains the original text along with the translations and notes. An audio version of this book is also available. Read more
