Rwanda, the "land of a thousand hills", is a landlocked country in the East African rift valley and lies in the altitude range between 1000 m and 4507 m. The watershed between the Nile and the Congo runs through the national territory. There is a temperate tropical highland climate with two dry seasons and two rainy seasons per year. Rwanda has set up 3 national parks to protect nature. Of these, the best known is the Volcano National Park, which belongs to the Virunga Mountains and is considered a biosphere reserve. This is where Dian Fossey did her research on the mountain gorillas. Akagera National Park includes grass-tree savannas as well as swamps and lakes. Nyungwe Forest National Park is evergreen and has significant biodiversity. According to BirdLife International, Rwanda shares 2 EBAs (Endemic Bird Areas) with its neighboring countries. In addition to the 3 national parks, BirdLife International has registered 4 other areas as IBAs (Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas). The country is very poor, but the economic development is extremely positive. Traveling in this country requires some dedication, but the birdlife is fantastic. This multilingual (en, de, fr, es, ja, cn) bird guide introduces the entire birdlife of Rwanda in color. As a bonus, links to HD videos of more than 145 bird species and to audios of 45 species are included. Where available, links to the valuable websites of UNESCO, BirdLife International and the Ramsar Organization are provided, which characterize the country and help to find the best sites for birdwatching.
