VERSION ADAPTED FOR VIOLAThe composer Hans Sitt (1850-1922) was a renowned violinist, but also a performer and teacher of the viola, writing musical literature including pedagogical works and repertoire for the viola. 100 Etudes for Viola are an adaptation of 100 Etüden als Unterrichtsmaterial zu jeder Violinschule zu gebrauchen, Opus 32: Book I - 20 Etüden in der 1. Lage (1889).These Etudes, although dating from the end of the 19th century, are still ideal for the training of beginners and amateur violists who wish to master the basic technique of the viola, as they have melodies in which scales and arpeggios with varied rhythms predominate, but using only the first position. Around the world the 100 Etudes are used by many teachers in music conservatories to impart knowledge to basic and intermediate level students, due to the way Sitt wrote these Etudes, the difficulty increases progressively and systematically as it progresses, although Book I does not contain all the tonalities, it does focus on staccato and legato, as this adds a greater degree of complexity in the use of the right hand.Between 1883 and 1895, Sitt as a violist was a member of the Brodsky String Quartet in Leipzig, together with Hugo Becker, Julius Klengel and Adolph Brodsky. This makes it clear that Sitt had a broad knowledge of the technical and advanced basis of the viola to develop his teaching methods for both violin and viola, it is the Etudes that could testify to the different types of methodologies that are applied to reinforce the performer's weaknesses, as the similarity between the two instruments makes it possible for us to adapt the in an interval of just below 5th in this spacious version, with a distribution of measures comfortable for the performer's reading. We have added in grey colour some suggestions made by the editor. Read more
